“Note on structure of opera: Each cast member was asked to individually interpret Jean Genet and Our Lady of the Flowers through whatever medium theyhad the highest passion for, whether it be bloodletting, ritual magic, soundscapes, theoretical philosophizing, video art, meta conceptual set design, or even opera singing. At rehearsals, we discussed these possible performances, potential roles and any relevant biographical information as we sipped vodka, scribbled on paper, screamed into the speaker phone, wildly gesticulated, got in fetish fights, turned on the laser lights and smoke machine and danced to eurobeat, smoked a lot of cigarettes inside, organized a Bash Back Convergence (I know, right?!), got bored and went downstairs to the dungeon to film a blow job, all the while telling each other we were brilliant. All in all, we did our best to mirror what we imagined an opera production looked like back in the day. “Rossini wrote the Barber of Seville in 3 weeks!” was our mantra. We also used the word “slippage” a lot. Like a lot a lot, actually.”
