Here’s the third installment of Ariel’s court fashion series, and once again to get all the updates on her case and to find out when the next benefit will be, check out the Denver ABC website.

Note the shard of glass fan… We’ll be selling accessories made from glass shards to benefit Ariel’s court fee’s, they’re a little pricey,  starting at $200 for a necklace, and significantly more for the glass fans, but they are genuine Democratic Headquarters glass, so they are totally collector items.

I can’t even explain how great it’s been dressing Ariel, it’s really reinforced my passion for… um fashion, just in the sense that having the opportunity to share clothes and style with someone is so warm and intimate.  It’s such a great way to make and deepen friendships, I just love the whole process!  I can see why fashion is at the heart of so many gift based indigenous communities, it’s because caring for someone’s image is the collective celebration of that person’s agency and self mythology and in that sense it is a perfect metaphor for the intersection of individuality and collectivism.

Ariel and I were discussing the fucking maoists walking back from this photo shoot and she remarked that fashion parties are perhaps a uniquely anarchist activity, something that would be difficult to imagine happening in any other political persuasion, and I think it’s because of the reasons above.  It’s because both fashion and anarchism are this perpetual discussion of combining d.i.y. or die egoism with consensus decision making and concerns for personal image within the greater community.  That and because everyone knows how much queers love looking sexy! psh…  But yeah, the next court date is in late December, so keep supporting Ariel and buy one of our glass shards!

Since I’ve been so bad about posting lately, I figured I would just share a little list of a few random things I like and let you sort out the rest.

#1: This guy

somali-pirate

Now while all in all I think that the fashion from the Somalian pirates has been a little lack luster, I think that this guy is really holding it down in a sort of Grey Gardens meets anarchist super villain way.   And in other news, aren’t these guys amazing!  Whether or not they are actually fighting to protect their shores from illegal fishing and dumping, they are hitting capitalism where it hurts and, you know, it just warms my heart thinking about them.

#2 Feminist Heist Movies

mad-money

You may think you know the Boulevardier inside and out, but one thing you probably didn’t know is that he’s a huge heist movie aficionado.  One of my projects on the table is to start a heist movie night and for each screening have a demo of an o.g. confidence trick from here or something… we’ll see if that pans out or what.  Anyway, heist movies are great, they are the only shiny, big budget, anarchist, feel good genre out there, the only problem is that they are dominated by men, though you can always choose to see them as potential transmen, (or in the case of Ocean’s 11, gay men) as I do. Eitherway, that’s a lot of transmen in the heist movie limelight and it is really refreshing to see a feminist heist movie such as Mad Money out there.  It’s just fantastic, get it from the library or whatever but just see it, it’s mahvelous.  Another great heist movie I saw is Lies & Alibies, which was with a whole slew of amazing actors and actresses and was hilarious and overall well worth it, though at one point they paint S&M in a pretty bad light, just ignore that.

#3 This Guy and His Accessories

Pitch perfect, pitch perfect.  He also runs a lovely column on opera and what not called Trrill which seems a little defunct but check it out nonetheless.

#4 The Aire Fresco

20106324-1

Ingredients: Gin, sparkling water (never tonic!), healthy slice of cucumber and a dash of lime

A light, refreshing, adult, contemporary, spring drink invented by my partner and master chef, Bruiser.  The cucumber is everything.  It’s very pleasant and spiritually uplifting.  The name comes from my Ecuadorian friend Antonio who says this every time  he steps outside, each time with his arms out to his side and head tilted back.  The drink is an homage to life.

#5 Milwaukee and it’s people

Every time I turn around I hear new amazing things coming out of this city, from the Cream City Collectives to a slew of mahvelous queer zines and now this!  C-Con sent me these videos as an example of a feminist bike culture, enjoy!

So I’ve been more than a little obsessed with pushing the limits of appropriate men’s accessories these days.  Part of the reason is that I recently saw the movie Color Me Kubrick with John Malkovich (or Ham Malkoham as I call him) and was truly stunned by the fashion choices they made.  In the movie Malkovich plays a queer grifter who is drifting through life pretending to be Stanley Kubrick, another grifter! I love it!  But as the movie progresses, Malkovich starts wearing stranger and stranger accessories until he’s literally using trash as accessories and with an all in all positive effect! Some of my favorites were a shower cap, eye patch, lots of head scarves worn in variety of ways, a fake LV purse (and referring to it constantly), battery powered fan, butterfly broach, a fifth of vodka, fingerless fishnet gloves, rings that are too small and don’t fully fit on the finger, bright clashing patterned socks, pocket squares, plastic visors, cigarette holders etc etc.

I love the traditional men’s accessories: gloves, hats, ties etc but after a while they do get dull and being willing to throw on some trash really opens up the door to endless possibilities. Personally I think that this approach needs to be done with caution, it’s best to have a solid classic look before throwing a shower cap on your head and in the end, attitude is really what will sell the whole thing.  Fashion collective, and juggernaught of recycled-fashion inspiration, Andrea Crews is pretty much the master of trash as accessories, as you can see yourself.

And here are a couple more directions you can take with inappropriate accessorizing, which I pilfered from that land of endless fashion insight known as Style Bubble
